How It Works

Baby clothing sizes vary by brand but generally follow age ranges. Weight and length are more reliable than age alone, since babies vary widely in size. When sizes conflict, go with the largest. Not medical advice.

The Formula

Compare age, weight, and height to standard size charts
Use the largest size among the three measurements
Sizes: NB, 0-3m, 3-6m, 6-9m, 9-12m, 12-18m, 18-24m, 2T-3T

Variables

  • NB — Newborn -- up to 8 lbs, 21 inches
  • 2T/3T — Toddler sizes for 2-3 year olds

Worked Example

6-month-old, 16 lbs, 26 inches: 3-6 months or 6-9 months depending on brand. Buy the larger size.

Practical Tips

  • European sizes use centimeters (e.g., 70 = 6-9 months)
  • Buy a few sizes ahead during sales -- babies grow fast
  • Check the weight range on the tag, not just the age
  • Footless outfits and separates last longer across sizes
